Why neoprene
Four things rubber cannot do.

Closed-cell neoprene seals moisture out. Nothing soaks in, nothing sours. Wipe it, roll it, done.

A dense, tactile surface that stays planted when your hands stop being dry.

The give that softened cold water now sits between the floor and your knees, wrists and spine.

Not a travel mat. Unroll it once and leave it: it lies flat, it stays put, and it was never designed to be folded into a bag twice a day.
Neoprene can never be melted down, so it is upcycled mechanically: shredded and re-bonded, not reprocessed with heat. Surf and dive wetsuits, not virgin neoprene, not limestone sold as a virtue.

What one mat does, and what it is.

About 1.2 kg of neoprene that does not go to the bin.
A full wetsuit weighs about 1.5 kg. Take out zips, seams and offcuts and about 1.2 kg of neoprene is left. That is an industry estimate until our own scale replaces it: every suit weighed on arrival, every mat weighed when it is cut, all hundred in a public ledger.

It would never have gone away on its own.
Neoprene is a cross-linked rubber. It does not biodegrade and it cannot be re-melted. Shredding and re-bonding it is the only honest way to use it again.
- Origin
No new chloroprene was made for this mat.
Virgin neoprene starts as chloroprene. The U.S. EPA links the chloroprene plant in Louisiana to some of the highest industrial cancer risk in the country. The neoprene in this mat was made once, years ago, for a wetsuit. No new batch was made for it.
- 5 to 10 kg
Roughly the CO2e a mat made from new material would carry.
If this mat stands in for one made from virgin neoprene or PVC, the new material alone would come to somewhere between 5 and 10 kg of CO2e. That is a range from public life-cycle data, not a measurement of ours. We have no carbon audit yet, so we round it and leave it there.
We cannot tell you this mat saves a dolphin. Nobody can. We can tell you exactly which wetsuit it came from.
Why I am making a hundred of these
The best surf material in the world gets thrown away every season, and the best surface for a steady practice was hiding inside it the whole time. I am making a hundred, by myself, numbered, because I would rather do this honestly than fast.

The questions everyone asks first.
- Made from a used wetsuit. Is it clean?
- Every wetsuit is cleaned before it is upcycled, and closed-cell neoprene seals moisture out instead of soaking it in. Your mat holds no sweat, water or bacteria. Wipe it and it is ready.
- Will it smell?
- No. Closed-cell neoprene does not absorb odor the way open-cell foam and rubber do. It is the same reason it works in the sea for years.
- Is it genuinely recycled?
- Yes. It is made from surf and dive wetsuits, mechanically upcycled into new sheets. Not virgin neoprene, not limestone sold as a virtue.
- How heavy is it?
- Heavier than a travel mat, and deliberately so. Neoprene has density, which is what makes it stay flat, stay put and absorb impact. If you carry your mat across a city every day, this is not the right mat. If it lives in one room, it is.
- Will mine look exactly like the photos?
- No, and that is the point. Each mat comes from one suit, so the grain and the depth of black shift from one to the next. Yours will be recognisably yours.
- Where do the wetsuits come from?
- Used surf and dive suits, collected rather than dumped. Cleaned before anything else happens to them.
- Am I committing to anything by joining?
